In this Tutorial, I will show you how to use the popular affiliate network, Commission Junction together with V-Ads overlay image ads to make money on your PHPmotion site while you work on direct selling your ad space!  I’ve been using this method for a while on WildCast.TV and it works quite nicely!

Requirements

Before we begin the tutorial, let’s go over the requirements.

• You will need to have V-Ads installed and working on your site.
• You will need a Commission Junction account.

Once you have the above requirements, we will be ready to begin the tutorial on the next page.

The new player is great and all, but it had me wondering… what happens to established sites with externally embedded videos.  Well, it turns out that the embedded videos will stop working, and members will be forced to re-embed their videos using the new embed code available on updated PHPmotion V3.5 sites.   Another issue is that the new PHPmotion player while promising, is missing many of the “must have” features of the JW player like Pseudo-Streaming, D-Related, and skins.  Also some people may just plain not like the new player, and that’s understandable since JW is a more mature and well established player.

(Video) How to Install PHPmotion V3

In this guide, I will show you how to install PHPmotion V3.

Requirements

• Before you even think of starting this tutorial, make sure your web host or server meets all of the PHPmotion System Requirements. If your host does not meet these requirements, you can find an official list of supported hosts here.
• Cpanel or Plesk access. I will be using Cpanel in this tutorial
• You need a good FTP client. For this tutorial, I will use FileZilla. If you don’t know how to use an FTP client, check out this article on how to use FileZilla FTP client.
• FTP access to your website’s public_html directory.
• You will need an archive utility. If you do not have one, I highly recommend 7-Zip for Windows. Linux users can use the built in archive tool.

Currently PHPmotion uses a video delivery method known as Progressive Download.  This type of delivery requires the entire video to be downloaded before you can reach the end.  When a video is played, a portion of the video is downloaded into the buffer before it begins.   If you attempt to skip to a part of the video that has not yet been downloaded into the buffer, the playhead simply skips to the end of the buffer and usually stops playing until the buffer has had a chance to catch up.

Another method is True Streaming which requires the use of a streaming server software like Adobe’s Flash Media Server.  This method allows you to skip anywhere on the video timeline without having to wait on a buffer.  This method works great, however it can be difficult to set up and expensive.

Then comes Pseudo-Streaming.  Technically this method is still Progressive Download but with the added benefit of being able to skip anywhere on the video timeline without having to wait for the entire video to load. This is the method we will be discussing today.

Below is an example of a video being delivered via Pseudo-Streaming. Click the play button then click anywhere on the timeline to skip forward to a part of the video that has not yet buffered.   You will notice that the video will start to buffer for a few seconds then play again from the point where you clicked.

How this works is, when you click on a point on the timeline, the streamer script looks for an access point in the metadata contained within the flv file.  The streamer script then tells the player to restart the progressive download from that point.   The same thing happens if you then skip back, or forward again, and so on.

Pseudo Streaming requires that all FLV files be injected with metadata.  The metadata is how the streamer script knows at what point in the video to move too when a point on the timeline is clicked.   Luckely, PHPmotion automatically injects the metadata when converting using FLVtool2 so all we have to do is make the streamer file and change a few lines in the embed code.

The vast majority of problems IMO is that people don’t understand how to install the PHP Shield loaders properly. Either they can’t find the documentation on the phpSHIELD website, they don’t understand the documentation (which isn’t very beginner friendly), or they believe that they have to install the full version of phpSHIELD which costs $75. However this just isn’t true. The fact is…the phpSHIELD loaders are free, and all you need to install (as far as phpSHIELD goes), in order to run PHPmotion or any other script that utilizes phpSHIELD.

This tutorial will give you step by step instructions on how to install phpSHIELD loaders on a Linux server. Please be sure to read all of the requirements before beginning tutorial.

Requirements

• This tutorial covers installing phpSHIELD on a Linux server. These instructions will do no good if you are using a Windows server. I know that it can be done, however Windows servers are not supported by PHPmotion so there is no sense in me covering how to install on Windows.
• You must have root access to your server. This means you have a VPS, dedicated server, or are running a server in your home. If you have shared hosting, you will not be able to install phpSHIELD, so there is no point reading any further if you are on a shared hosting plan.
• In this tutorial, I will be installing phpSHIELD on a server running CentOS 5.2, although the tutorial should still be helpful for any Linux distro.
• Although not vital, it would be helpful if you have at least a basic knowledge of Linux commands and how to use a Linux terminal and/or SSH client.

Installing phpShield Loaders

1. The first thing we need to do is check a couple of PHP settings. The easiest way to do this is with a phpinfo file. If you don’t know how to create a phpinfo file, you can find instructions here.
2. Now that you have a php info file, upload it to your website’s public_html directory and view it in your browser by typing http://www.yoursite.com/phpinfo.php in your address bar. You want to find/verify the following in your phpinfo.php file:
   • Your PHP version
   • Thread Safety is disabled
   • enable_dl is set to on
   • The path to your extension_dir
   • Path to your php.ini file
3. Now connect to your webserver using your favorite SSH client and login as root.
4. Create a new working directory then change directories:
   # mkdir ~/phpshield

   # cd ~/phpshield

5. Download the phpSHIELD loaders:
   # wget http://phpshield.com/loaders/phpshield.loaders.linux.zip

   or if you have a 64 bit OS (most people will have a 32 bit OS so you will most likely use the code above)

   # wget http://phpshield.com/loaders/phpshield.loaders.linux-64.zip
6. Extract the loaders:
   # unzip phpshield.loaders.linux.zip
7. If you do a directory list:
   # ls

   you will see a bunch of files named phpshield.4.3.lin to phpshield.5.2.lin. What we want to do here is find the phpshield file with the number that matches your PHP version. You can find your PHP version at the very top of your phpinfo file from earlier.

8. Now we need to copy the appropriate phpshield loader file to your PHP extensions directory.
   # cp ~/phpshield/phpshield.x.x.lin /path/to/your/php/extensions/directory

   Replace x.x above with your PHP version and use the path to your PHP extensions directory (you should have found this in step 2 above.)

9. Open your php.ini file
   # nano /path/to/php/ini/php.ini

   You should have found the path to your php.ini file in your phpinfo.php file from earlier.

10. Append the following to the Dynamic Extensions section of your php.ini file:
    # extension=phpshield/phpshield.x.x.lin

    Replace x.x with the number on the phpshield file you moved earlier.

11. Finally, restart httpd:
    # /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart

That’s it! You should have phpSHIELD installed correctly on your server now.

Here’s what I still have on the to-do list in case anyone is interested

• Add the promoted videos section to the home page
• Add title tags to the photo thumbnails on the index page
• Update JW FLV player to the newest version
• Add extra features (all features will be announced when the template is launched)
• Clean up code (and remove any unnecessary code)
• Validate all template HTML and CSS

So far I have the Index page and Video Play pages done and in the next few days I will be doing the photo and audio pages. The plan is to have the template ready by the public release of PHPmotion v3 or very shortly after!
